Derek: The Caretaker Who Cared (Kind Of)

My New Book Is Out Now

Mr Derek Smart is the school Caretaker. But his job title has been changed to Site Manager - he’s yet to notice a difference in the roles.

Mr Smart has been doing this job for many, many years and to be frank, he has had enough. His thoughts frequently drift towards his retirement plan, and whether he should have one.

Observe how he negotiates the academic year whilst being constantly barraged by people, big ones and little ones, all demanding instant attention.

Good job the headteacher has taken on an apprentice to help him… or is it?

My Books

But There Is No Ef In Phonics!

Meet Mrs Belvedere. An experience if somewhat jaded teacher.

Journey with her as she navigates the academic year through endless meetings, ‘new’ initiatives and the children who cause her incredulity and amusement in equal measure.

‘Every teacher has a book full of stories to tell!’

I decided that I would be a teacher when I was seven years old. My parents, both teachers, advised against it. They said…

“It’s a thankless task and there’s no money in it.”

How right they were.

But I enjoyed my schooling for the most part, mainly because I did not take it too seriously (except sports day…).

Throughout my 34 year teaching career, there were of course challenges, but I could usually find something funny about them to get me through. And thankfully, cakes were never in short supply either!
